For the emitter, I'm using 5V with 220 ohms resistance. The receiver also has a 5V power supply and a 5K pulldown resistor. This gives me a range of around 7.5-8 inches, perfect for a 6 inch diameter hole. Note that the voltage given by the receiver is under 2V when the emitter is too far away. For projects needing longer distance, a 5mW laser and 100K LDR would probably work better, but for a little more cost.
Also, the long leg on the emitter is the anode, while the long leg on the receiver is the cathode. A little strange, but the products work, so I'm not too judgmental. Highly recommended for small projects like my own.
I searched on-line and found out that the most likely cause of the problem was a failed infrared LED emitter. A YouTube video suggested this emitter would work in the machine. I replaced the LED infrared emitter and it solved my problem. The ice maker started to work again and the ice-full indicator came on when the ice tray was actually full.
The hardest part of the repair was to carefully dig out the enormous amount for hot glue that was used to embed the wiring and sensor. Once that was done, the repair was easy. I used silicone sealer to secure the sensor and wiring so that it would be easier to remove if I ever have to replace the emitter again in the future. I now have 9 spare emitters to use.
10 of 10 IR photodiodes were functional. Current generated from an IR source was very low (nA-uA range). Other reviewers stated that they failed when using this LED as the IR source for the photodiode. Given the LOW range, failure is not surprising. Use with a suitable amplifier circuit MAYBE successful.

I used about 13 mA of LED current and placed the photodiode in series with a 220K resistor to make a nice logic level signal. This was able to detect a beam interruption across a 15 mm gap. There is no way to predict if the next bag will perform similarly.

to realize is the POLARITY of detector diodes is reversed from normal LEDS. Short leg / flat side
IS POSITIVE. However not all detectors are reversed. Some even work either way but are much better
when corrected correctly. Doesn't matter where you buy them check..
And data on these parts is not provided and nor I could not find any. I bought 20 pcs, but only received 17 in the bag.
